Learning Outcomes
  • Use the basic principles of a healthy and varied diet to prepare dishes.
  • Understand where food comes from.

Preparation

If you have never joined a live lesson before, see the guidance hub, where you will find technical and educational support.

Live lessons work best when students have some prior knowledge and have prepared questions. Questions and shout outs can be submitted in advance via the Live Lesson tab in your Encounter Edu profile.

Read our ‘How to generate higher order questions’ guide and give the children some time to generate some questions about fruit, vegetables, farming etc.

Student sheets are available for this lesson, click the links on the right hand side of this page to download.

Some teachers may wish to bring example items of the fruit and vegetables featured in the lesson. These are tomatoes, peppers, carrots and blueberries.

Session outline

1. Introduction (3 mins)

Josh and Jennie will open the lesson with a brief introduction to our harvest rainbow adventure.

2. Subject knowledge and activity (17 mins)

They will then take us on a quest around the countryside to search for harvest rainbow salad ingredients. We will collect peppers, tomatoes, carrots and blueberries. At each location we will meet the people involved in growing the ingredients and learn all about them. We will also learn about what plants need to grow and parts of plants.

After we have collected each ingredient, Josh and Jennie will return to the studio to demonstrate how to safely and correctly prepare it for our harvest rainbow salads. Throughout the quest, the children will complete a harvest rainbow adventure quiz activity.

4. Q&A and conclusion (10 mins)

Our expert panel will answer some of the questions students have submitted.

Post lesson activities

You could extend your harvest live project into a full Farming STEMterprise project by challenging your learners to set up their own businesses.
